Anyone can be a vegetarian. A diet free from meat has all
the vitamins, minerals and protein you could need. Iron, Calcium, Vitamin B12, protein - all no problem for vegetarians. In fact the only thing you will miss out
on with a vegetarian diet is lots of saturated fat and the higher risk of food poisoning that comes with meat.
The facts speak for themselves: vegetarians have 30 per cent less heart
disease, 40 per cent less premature mortality - you really could live longer as a veggie! A vegetarian diet has also been proven to help prevent diabetes, arthritis,
obesity, gall stones, hypertension and osteoporosis. You can make the change Switch to a balanced vegetarian diet and you'll feel the benefits immediately. For example,
in just a few short months your cholesterol levels should come down.
A vegetarian diet is certainly healthier, but it's also kinder. If you really
care about animal welfare - and most of us do - the most positive step you can
take is to stop eating them! 600,000 are SLAUGHTERED every Hour in the USA. Most
will have been raised in the unnatural conditions of the 'factory' farm. From
the cramped cages and dingy sheds, these innocent animals - as intelligent as
any household pet - are loaded onto lorries and taken off for slaughter. In many
areas of the developing world, land which could be used for human food is squandered
growing crops to feed the cattle of Europe and America. In Europe a vegetarian
population could feed itself on just 30 per cent of the land we use at present.
Livestock pollute our rivers and streams and are one of the principal sources
of the global warming gas, methane. By becoming vegetarian you can live a healthier
life, confident that the food on your plate is kinder to animals and to the planet.
Giving up meat, poultry and fish won't be a hardship, as vegetarian food is tasty,
economical, and can be found in every restaurant, health food store and supermarket
.
Most people don't associate what is really on their dinner plate and
the living flesh of animals . If you saw an animal been slaughtered I don't think you would eat it again . If you giving up meat saved only one animals life , don't
you think it would be worth it .
Why Become Vegetarian?
There are as many reasons for becoming vegetarian as there are vegetarians; it's a highly personal and individual decision
to make. But in a survey conducted on behalf of The Vegetarian Society the majority of people said that they gave up meat and fish because they did not morally approve
of killing animals, or because they objected to the ways in which animals are kept, treated and killed for food. With the growing awareness of the importance of healthy
food, many people are also becoming vegetarian because it matches the kind of low fat, high fibre diet recommended by dieticians and doctors. Concern about the environment
is another factor as people become more aware of the effect raising animals for their meat is having on the environment. Or you may be concerned about wasting world
food resources by using land to raise animals for meat instead of growing crops that can feed more people directly.
